Katherine Heigl to star in 'One for the Money' film
The Internet has been buzzing today with reactions to Variety's February 8, 2010 announcement that Katherine Heigl has been slated to appear as Stephanie Plum in Columbia Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment's film version of One for the Money. Heigl has most recently starred in The Ugly Truth (2009). Television audiences know her as Dr. Isobel (Izzie) Stevens on "Grey's Anatomy."
Variety adds that Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Wendy Finerman will produce the film. Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith wrote the screenplay, which Liz Brixius will revise.
Janet Evanovich, author of the book on which the film is to be based, posted this notice on her website confirming the news:
TriStar (now Columbia) has signed on Katherine Heigl to play the part of Stephanie Plum in the movie of One For the Money. We are not involved in the casting process, but if we hear of any other actors being signed on we will post the news ASAP. There is no word yet on when the movie might go into actual production."
One for the Money is the first of fifteen titles currently in Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Stephanie is a hopelessly inept but always entertaining New Jersey bounty hunter with a number of unusual friends and relatives.
Columbia TriStar acquired the film rights to One for the Money even before the book's original 1994 publication date. Reese Witherspoon was scheduled to play Stephanie Plum at that time, but she was unable to take on the role.
The film's plot appears to remain close to that of the book on which it is based. Stephanie Plum, who has just lost her job as a lingerie buyer, decides to become a bounty hunter. Her first assignment is to find police officer Joe Morrelli, who is under suspicion for murder. Joe and Stephanie, who have known each other since childhood, had a brief sexual encounter when Stephanie was sixteen.
A new Stephanie Plum series novel, Sizzling Sixteen, is due out in June 2010. Evanovich has also written four additional novels in the Stephanie Plum Between-the-Numbers series in which Stephanie shares top billing with Diesel, a man with supernatural powers. Evanovich has announced her intention of spinning Diesel off into a separate series in 2010, in which he will be partnered not by Stephanie, but by Lizzie, a new love interest.
